Desert autumn weather is funny: 92F today, down to 62F tonight. It’s all good. This is the best time of year in the desert.

This post is for all you night owls & moon light readers. I know you.

Night poured over the desert. It came suddenly, in purple. In the clear air, the stars drilled down out of the sky, reminding any thoughtful watcher that it is in the deserts and high places that religions are generated. When men see nothing but bottomless infinity over their heads they have always had a driving and desperate urge to find someone to put in the way.”
Terry Pratchett (1948-2015)

When we are alone on a starlit night, when by chance we see the migrating birds in autumn descending on a grove of junipers to rest and eat; when we see children in a moment when they are really children, when we know love in our own hearts; or when, like the Japanese poet, Bashō, we hear an old frog land in a quiet pond with a solitary splash – at such times the awakening, the turning inside out of all values, the “newness,” the emptiness and the purity of vision that make themselves evident, all these provide a glimpse of the cosmic dance.”

Thomas Merton (1915-1968)

October is the fallen leaf, but it is also a wider horizon more clearly seen. It is the distant hills once more in sight, and the enduring constellations above them once again.

— Hal Borland (1900–1978)

At dark, Soen-roshi leads us outside, points at Orion; he loves to celebrate the night and sun and water. “Swallow the stars,” he murmurs, “Until you are one with the universe, with all-pervading universal life!”

Peter Matthiessen (1927-2014) Nine-Headed Dragon River – Zen Journals (1998)

Do you imagine the universe is agitated?

Go into the desert at night and look out at the stars.

This practice should answer the question…

The sage settles her mind as the universe settles the stars in the sky.

By uniting her mind with the Subtle Origin, she calms it.

Once calm, it naturally expands, and ultimately, her mind becomes as vast and immeasurable as the night sky.
